Details of Manufacturing, Chemical Composition, and Applications of ASTM A179 Seamless Steel Tubes

ASTM A179 seamless steel tubes are cold-drawn low-carbon seamless steel tubes designed specifically for heat transfer equipment such as heat exchangers and condensers under the American standard system. Due to their excellent processing and mechanical properties, they are widely used in industrial fields. This standard steel tube is formed using a cold-drawing process, with a diameter range covering 3.2-76.2 mm, a wall thickness accuracy of ±0.1 mm, no oxide layer on the inner and outer walls, high surface finish, ability to withstand high pressure without leakage, no deformation during cold bending, and no cracks during flaring and flattening, meeting the manufacturing requirements of high-precision equipment.

Regarding the chemical composition of A179 seamless steel tubes, ASTM A179 seamless steel tubes strictly control carbon content (0.06%-0.18%), manganese content (0.27%-0.63%), and sulfur and phosphorus impurity content ≤0.035%, ensuring material purity. In terms of mechanical properties, its tensile strength is ≥325MPa, yield strength is ≥180MPa, elongation is ≥35%, and hardness is ≤72HRB. It can operate stably in a temperature range of -50℃ to 450℃, making it particularly suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure steam systems.

Regarding the manufacturing process of A179 seamless steel pipe, after the final cold drawing, it requires heat treatment at a temperature above 650℃ to eliminate processing stress and optimize the microstructure (ferrite + pearlite). During production, it undergoes multiple tests, including flattening tests, flaring tests, and hydrostatic tests, to ensure that each pipe meets the standard requirements.

In terms of application areas, ASTM A179 seamless steel pipe is the preferred material in industries such as boilers, chemicals, and oil and gas.
