ASTM A106—Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High Temperature Service
ASTM A106 (ASME SA106) seamless steel pipes/tubes can transport fluids or gases under high temperature and pressure. The three grades available are A, B, and C. ASTM A106 grade B is the most widely used and is commonly found in oil and natural gas refineries, power plants, petrochemical project factories, boilers, and ship construction. These pipelines must carry fluids and gases that exhibit higher temperature and pressure levels.
ASTM A106 Grade B seamless pipe, also referred to as ASME SA106 Grade B pipes, is a carbon steel pipe designed for high-temperature applications. It has a seamless, nominal design for optimum performance.
ASTM A106 Grade C seamless pipes (also referred to as ASME SA106 Grade C pipes) are steel pipes made of carbon-manganese and designed for high-temperature large-diameter boilers and superheaters. Their chemical composition is simple and comparable to 20G carbon steel, but with higher levels of carbon and manganese. This results in a yield strength approximately 12% greater than that of 20G, as well as good plasticity and toughness. The production process of these pipes is straightforward and they possess good cold and hot workability. Replacing 20G headers (economizer, water wall, low-temperature superheater and reheater header) with it can reduce the thickness of the wall by around 10%. This leads to material cost savings, a decrease in welding workload, and an improvement in stress difference during start-up.
Chemical Composition of ASTM A106 Seamless Pipe:
Steel Grade | C≤ | Mn | P≤ | S≤ | Si≥ | Cr≤ | Cu≤ | Mo≤ | Ni≤ | V≤ |
A | 0.25 | 0.27-0.93 | 0.035 | 0.035 | 0.10 | 0.40 | 0.40 | 0.15 | 0.40 | 0.08 |
B | 0.30 | 0.29-1.06 | 0.035 | 0.035 | 0.10 | 0.40 | 0.40 | 0.15 | 0.40 | 0.08 |
C | 0.35 | 0.29-1.06 | 0.035 | 0.035 | 0.10 | 0.40 | 0.40 | 0.15 | 0.40 | 0.08 |
Note:
① For every 0.01% reduction in carbon content below the specified maximum carbon content, A106 seamless steel pipes are allowed to increase the manganese content by 0.06% above the specified maximum manganese content, but the maximum shall not exceed 1.35%;
②The sum of the five elements Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, and V shall not exceed 1.00%
Mechanical Properties of ASTM A106 Seamless Pipe:
Steel Grade | Tensile Strength(Mpa) | Yield Strength(Mpa) | Elongation(%) | Delivery Condition |
A | ≥330 | ≥205 | 20 | Annealed |
B | ≥415 | ≥240 | 20 | Annealed |
C | ≥485 | ≥275 | 20 | Annealed |
This specification covers seamless carbon steel pipes designed for use in high-temperature applications. These pipes are appropriate for welding, bending, flanging, and other similar forming operations. Mechanical testing of the specimens will encompass tensile, bending, flattening, hydrostatic and non-destructive electric tests. Specimens that are subjected to bending tests should consist of sections cut from a pipe. The specimens included in flattening tests must be smooth at the ends and free of burrs, with the exception of crop ends. All testing must be conducted at room temperature. Should any defects or flaws manifest in any test specimen, it may be rejected and replaced with a new one. In the event that a specimen displays scribe scratches before testing, a retest should be permitted. Additionally, a retest may be granted if a specimen breaks due to either an inside or outside surface flaw.
